San Diego Interfaith Housing Foundation receives donations from both private individuals and corporations, who in turn receive substantial tax credits for their benevolence.  The funds are then used to purchase multi-family residential properties in the San Diego area.  The Foundation currently owns over 12 such properties.

“Sporting clays” consists of a series of natural and unique shooting fields connected along a course trail. At each field, participants attempt to shoot airborne clay targets simulating gamebird wingshooting. After Kids for Utica and City Youth, came Victorious Life Church and Outreach Center. The weekly family service is held on Saturday evenings at 6:00 pm. When the Pastors decided to have the weekly service on Saturday evenings, the reasons were twofold. First, having a Saturday evening service gives the people in the neighborhood a place to be, rather than on the streets or at a party place. Working with inner city people, they also realized that most of the people in the neighborhood would not get up early on a Sunday morning to make it to church and are more likely to come out on a Saturday night.

The second reason is to enable people from other churches to be involved with Victorious Life Church services also. Many of the staff at Victorious Life are also members of churches in other areas. With many different backgrounds, and being truly dedicated to being of one mind and one vision, this ministry involves people of like faith, but from different churches, all working towards the same purpose- spreading the Gospel in the city of Utica, NY.

Located in the worst part of the city of Utica, Kids for Utica and City Youth offers just what the neighborhood needs. With a service geared toward children ages 5-12 every Tuesday night at 6:00, and a Youth service for youth ages 12 and up every Thursday night at 6:30, the Gospel is shared more than in words only. Pastors Bill and Karen, along with their well trained staff, minister to the children and youth who come in with love in action. Teaching them from the word, equipping them with the tools they need for living, teaching them how to treat others with respect, giving them food, hygiene products, clothing, shoes, and anything else they might need, is all a part of the ministry offered here. The sign hanging on the side of the building defines the ministry in action: “Love is Something You Do”. 

Besides ministering to the kids and youth of the inner city, Kids for Utica and City Youth also teach the kids to minister, and allow them the opportunity to do so by having an outreach team, a drama team, a choir, a puppet team, and an Internship program. All of these teams are supervised and led by adults, but the ministers who are on the teams are children and youth.

Wanting to be on a team isn’t enough, though. The kids and youth have to have a heart dedicated to the Lord, and be faithful to going to their service each week. They must attend the service for their age group for a consecutive six weeks before they will be approved to be on a ministry team. They must have an attitude of respect and display the love of God to others in word and action. Meeting these requirements can be a challenge for kids who have not been taught at home. But the amazing thing is, once they are in this atmosphere and have been shown the love of God in action, they are able to meet the standards set by the Pastors.

Besides the outreach teams, who minister at churches, nursing homes, community gatherings, and parks, there are many other programs that have been set up to reach the neighborhood. There is Pastoral visitation, a community food pantry, a meal program for the kids in the area, an after school program for the kids to get help with their homework or even just come hang out in a positive atmosphere, and an Internship program to train older kids up in the works of the ministry.

Joyner is a gallery artist who in 1999 “got enough courage to start painting” and began creating his art with oil paint on wood panel. Origingally an illustrator, he found his true calling in fine art with a humorous angle.

Roger and Barbara Warner own one of these farms at 307 Denton Road in Hickman, California.  Roger received his degree in animal husbandry from Modesto Junior College in 1971.  Mrs. Warner, the former Barbara Zehrung, was a local girl when she and Roger got married.  They have raised almonds since 1976 and goats since the early 21^st century for use by service organizations as well as for meat.  The farm was established in 1918 by Roger’s grandfather, Tular Warner, while he was still a young man in his early twenties.

“When my father-in-law inherited [the business], we had beef cattle and, since the ranch was split between my father-in-law and his father, there wasn’t enough land to raise the feed for the cows and raise the cows, so we went into almonds,” said Mrs. Warner.  “Six, seven years ago, my husband decided he wanted animals again, so we got into the meat goats.”

However, most of the goats are sold live to the FSA and 4H kids for projects, said Mrs. Warner.  The FSA, also known as the Farm Service Agency of the United States Department of Agriculture, makes loans to individual rural youths to establish and operate income-producing projects of modest size in connection with their participation in 4-H clubs, Future Farmers of America, and similar organizations.

The Warners have a varied ethnic market for their tasty goat meat.  Hispanics enjoy a roast goat dish called Cabritto.  Then there are the Arabs and the Polynesians.  Mrs. Warner noted the economic reasons why Polynesians prefer goat.  ”When you think about the amount of land the Polynesians have, a goat takes less land, less feed, you know, and they’re smaller animals, so you don’t have to have refrigeration because you can butcher an animal, and feed a family, and there’s not a whole lot left.”  Asked what she would tell someone considering whether or not to incorporate goat meat into their diet, Mrs. Warner said that, although goat meat is not really a white meat, it is healthier than chicken because it has less fat.

Traveling to Korea for short term projects for mission trips and bible seminars, Julia teaches the students within a short length of time who are then able to learn to play hymns in no time at all.  Amazingly enough within two weeks of hands on training, the students can read music and then are able to play their instruments with ease.

At home in Livermore, CA.  Julia also teaches piano lessons privately. Children ages five up to adults can learn how to play classical music which is an art in itself.  In this arena of music which can be quite complex, it takes commitment and patience to grasp the depth of this type of music. Of these classes taught, they are used primarily for worship in churches.

I’m a pastor at Desert Oasis Fellowship in Indio, CA. We have been in the valley for 6 years outreaching to the community around us in many ways. We love to “take it to the streets” with a 20 ft trailer we personally own that folds out to a stage.  Along with providing free BBQ, snacks and drinks, we also bring instruments, songs, testimonies, puppets, clowns, games, and lots of prizes.  We also have two yearly events: one at Easter with a 2000 Easter egg hunt and another at Harvest Time with a carnival atmosphere to keep the kids off the streets.  We are actively involved with two major homeless shelters here; Martha’s Kitchen- we host children’s service once a month, bible study once a week and provide rides to church every service with two vans. Coachella Valley Rescue Mission Center- we host weekly bible studies and provide rides to services as well.  All of these events are sponsored by going out to local business and requesting donations to help with the community.  What ever is not covered comes in house where the people freely give many times what they don’t have.

Currently we are leasing three suites in a commercial building two being the main sanctuary, pastor’s office and nursery.  The third is our multi-purpose building which is our main classrooms and sanctuary for kdz JAM! 
We still have needs to complete the main sanctuary in the first two suites consisting of paint, baptism and actual walls for our nursery estimated around $5000.00.  The kdz JAM in our third suite is our recent expansion which we don’t have the money to build the classrooms we need. It’s estimated about another $5,000.00 for that.

We have always leased our buildings and have a great desire to build our own. For this to reach reality first we would need property.  At this time we have access to foreclosure property for around $100,000.00 this would allow funding for us to get a contractors loan to build.  I also have my Contractors License, and have the ability to save us lots of money on the construction side.

We are also in need of some more sound equipment about 4 cordless mikes, Church Computer, Duplicator for cd’s, We have two 15 passenger vans with over 345,000 miles we need tune-ups and new tires!

When we finally arrived and I saw those little children, it was worth all of the effort.  The children in the orphanage are so beautiful and they range in age from newborn babies up through high school.  What was totally overwhelming to me is that every one of them was nurtured, cherished and well cared for.  They receive an excellent academic education and they are also socially prepared for the time that they will eventually take their place in the outside world.  Currently, there are 50 orphans and 300 students in the boarding school.  Since there are no government programs which financially support orphaned children, the Audrene Scissom children’s home is funded solely through private donations.   Its future plan is to expand the facility in order to allow room to accommodate more children and take in more orphans and monetary donations are very welcomed and appreciated.

I have visited many orphanages in my life and this orphanage, by far, is the most impressive because of the special love, care and attentiveness that is shown to these children.  In other orphanages, there seems to be a shortage of staff and not enough comfort to share with all of the children, but at the Audrene Scism Children’s Home, the staff is so warm and it is as if these children belong to them.  It would be an amazing and fruitful investment to make a monetary donation to this Haven and to these beautiful children.

So in 1938, from a small radio station in eastern Michigan, Detroit Bible Class was born. Suddenly the spiritual doctor was making house calls—to hundreds of thousands of Scripture-hungry listeners.

Even though he was an unlikely radio personality—with a rough, authoritative voice—the program worked to great effect. And Dr. De Haan’s heavily underlined reflections on the Scripture quickly became a source of biblical wisdom for many. In response to his teaching, listeners asked for transcripts of the broadcast for use as study materials. These resources, soon in great demand, were the precursor of today’s widely distributed Discovery Series booklets.

From this spiritual foundation, the Grand Rapids, Michigan-based ministry continues to build upon the foundation of Dr. De Haan’s vision and work. Richard De Haan, often called “the encourager,” was committed to faithfulness to God’s Word and to integrity as a ministry. His favorite expression was “Trust in God and do the right.”

Current President Mart De Haan is known for his kindness, his concern for doctrinal accuracy, and for communicating the Word of God in a way that’s clear and to the point.

About the Press Democrat Newspaper

The very first newspaper in Santa Rosa, the parent of today’s Press Democrat, was begun in 1857, just three years after Santa Rosa was chosen as the seat of Sonoma County and seven years after California became a part of the United States.

Called the Sonoma Democrat this newspaper was a four-page weekly. Its name reflected the politics of the Santa Rosa and Russian River valleys, which were settled in the 1840s and ’50s by farmers from Missouri, Kentucky and Tennessee.

The founding publisher was Alpheus Russell, a merchant with some newspaper experience who came to open a general store on Third Street. John Taylor, a prosperous rancher south of the new town, encouraged Russell to establish the paper, giving him a five-dollar gold piece for the first subscription.

At the end of a year, Russell sold the paper to printer E.R. Budd, who sold it again in 1860. The new owner was Thomas Thompson, a young Virginian who had edited Petaluma’s Sonoma County Journal five years earlier at the age of 17.

Thompson was a supporter of the Southern cause and conventional wisdom of the time said that Democratic party money, perhaps Confederate money, helped Thompson buy the paper to oppose the election of Abraham Lincoln.

Thompson and Samuel Cassiday, the Republican editor of the Petaluma paper, carried on a Civil War of words, in which Thompson was victorious.

Lincoln did not carry Sonoma County in either 1860 or 1864 elections.

Thompson played a major role in politics in Santa Rosa, the state, and later as U.S. Amabassador to Brazil. He sold the Sonoma Democrat in 1897 to Ernest L. Finley, owner of The Evening Press who merged the two papers and renamed the new publication The Press Democrat. Finley also bought The Santa Rosa Republican, the paper’s long-time competitor, in 1927. Ernest Finley’s wife, Ruth, was very much a part of the affairs of the newspaper. She encouraged him, also, to establish radio station KSRO in 1936. Control of the newspaper and radio station passed to Ruth at his death in 1942.

Mrs. Finley, described as a gentle, soft-spoken woman, co-published the two newspapers along with her son-in-law, Evert Person, for the next 31 years. During that time circulation of the newspaper rose from 10,000 to 55,000 subscribers. In 1948 the Santa Rosa Republican and The Press Democrat were merged. The Republican was renamed The Evening Press and continued as the afternoon edition. The morning edition continued as The Press Democrat. In 1951 The Evening Press died and The Press Democrat became the sole evening edition.

At Mrs. Finley’s death in 1973, ownership of The Press Democrat passed to her son-in-law and daughter, Evert and Ruth Person.

In 1985, shortly before Ruth Person died, the Persons sold The Press Democrat to The New York Times Company. In August 1985, three months after its takeover of the newspaper, The New York Times Company began construction on a $31 million, 78,000 square foot Rohnert Park production plant. Just one year later, the new Press Democrat rolled off the brand new 4-story presses and the community was urged to “Take A New Look.”

Today, with a readership of about a quarter million adults, The Press Democrat is the largest newspaper between San Francisco and the Oregon border.

Even now, the paper remains a reflection of the community it serves, through its Celebrate Community program and through additional contributions to area charities such as Starcross Community (funding for work with AIDS babies), the Holiday Spirit Drive for Coalition Against Hunger, the Helping Hand Fund and the United Way, as well as acting as a major sponsor of the Volunteer Center for the annual Human Race event.

The Press Democrat is also active in contributing to numerous education and other organizations such as the Sonoma State University Press Democrat Youth Service Award for high school seniors, awarded for youth service work.

Additionally, the company participates in community events and agencies such as the 4th of July Celebration of Sonoma County and the Sonoma County Family YMCA.
